Mamey Apple (Mammea americana)

Recently we tried yet another new fruit – Mammea americana – Mamey Apple. We ordered it on Orkos. The tree belongs to the family Calophyllaceae (for those who are interested in botanic) and is closely related to the mangosteen. It is originally from South America. The fruits are huge, with a diameter of 10 to 15 cm. The brown skin is quite thick (about 5 mm) and can easily be peeled of. The flesh of the fruit is brightly yellow, firm, juicy and abundant. The fruit contains one or two (or more) big seeds. The taste reminds of passion fruit and mango, with a slightly sour flavour.
It is not to be confused with the Sapote mamey.
