Today we went to the Naschmarkt, the biggest fruit and vegetable market in Vienna and we bought a whole box (about 17 kilograms) of oxheart tomatoes, our absolute favourite tomatoes! These delicious tomatoes taste very rich and aromatic. Two or three of them form a whole, satiating meal for us. Unfortunately in Austria they’re only available for a short period of time (from about mid-July to mid-September). We also grow them in our garden.
”Oxheart” doesn’t refer to a specific variety, but comprises a whole group of tomato varieties with similar properties. They origin in Europe and are very old. The name comes from their heartlike shape. But they also come in other shapes and different colours (yellow, pink or red). One fruit weighs between 50 and 500 grams (or even more!).
